Everyday life is the most important foundation of our well-being
How smooth and balanced your everyday life is affects how you feel on a daily basis. Everyday life doesn’t have to be dull drudgery or a draining struggle. It can be meaningful and reflect who you are – well-being comes from a life that fits you, where your needs are acknowledged.
You can shape your daily life to your liking with even small actions and changes. Start by thinking about what you need to feel well – fulfilled needs enhance well-being.
Fulfilled needs support well-being
To feel well, it's helpful to get to know yourself. What do I need to feel good? What works well for me in everyday life? What gives me energy?
When you know yourself better, it’s easier to focus on the right things in your daily routine. At the same time, you take responsibility for your own life and well-being.
When you begin to identify what you need from life, you're already on the right path:
- You understand yourself and your desires better.
- You can plan and implement things that support your well-being and energy.
- Life feels more meaningful when you act based on your own needs and values.
- You learn to approach things – and yourself – more positively and kindly.
- Life becomes more aligned with who you truly are.
Fulfilled needs generate positive energy. Unmet needs are often what cause stress and anxiety in everyday life. We all need, for example:
- Closeness to others
- Acceptance
- Being seen and heard
- Feeling appreciated
- Trust in others
- Support
- Love and warmth
- A sense of belonging
- Opportunities for self-expression – through play, work, study, or other activities
- Independence
- Safety
- A sense of wholeness
- Basic needs like food, water, and shelter
If your daily life doesn’t meet your needs, dissatisfaction grows and your mood may drop. The more important the unmet need is, the more significant the impact.
For example, if receiving others’ acceptance is especially important to you, rejection will feel even more painful. And on the other hand – the more you feel valued by others, the better you’ll feel.
Needs are different from wants
It’s important to distinguish between needs and wants, which bring only short-term pleasure. For instance, we may strongly want new clothes, a game, or a phone – but these are not actual needs. Fulfilling a real need creates a deeper and longer-lasting sense of satisfaction. For example, public praise or a sincere thank-you can bring a good feeling that lasts, because our need for appreciation and respectful treatment is met.
If your everyday life feels like things are just happening and you have no control, and your mood is frequently low, it’s time to pause. Ask yourself:
What needs to change in my daily life so that it better meets my needs?
When you recognize your needs, you can make changes that support your well-being. Life begins to feel more meaningful and fulfilling. Your mood lifts, and you feel more in charge of your own well-being. You also send yourself a clear message: you are important and worth the effort.
