What Are Dreams?
Dreaming is the ability to imagine what life could be at its best. A dream answers the question: What kind of life do I want to live? Am I satisfied with things as they are, or do I want something more? Dreams can be big things that come true after a long time, or small, enjoyable things that happen in the near future. A dream might be, for example, graduating into a profession, learning a new skill, having your own home, taking a trip abroad, or making a new purchase.
Where Do Dreams Come from?
Dreams are born from the ability to imagine and the courage to allow yourself something good. Dreaming requires self-awareness: knowing what feels natural and aligned with your values, what you truly want and need. It also requires courage and trust – trust that you are capable of reaching your dream. You can work with your dreams in different ways, such as through vision boards or a dream path.
Can Everyone Have Dreams?
Anyone pursuing a dream must take responsibility for their own feelings, thoughts, values, attitudes, the present moment, and their life choices and how they respond to them. You also need to consider your close relationships and life circumstances, and sometimes difficult decisions must be made.
You can begin pursuing a dream by setting yourself interim goals. How small these steps should be depends on the size of the dream. Setting and reaching these milestones builds confidence and increases the chances of achieving your dream. Not all dreams require a lot of work – fulfilling a small dream, like starting a new hobby, might not be difficult at all.
Dream Doesn’t Always Have to Come True
The journey toward a dream is valuable even if the dream doesn’t come true. The act of dreaming itself can help you cope better with everyday life. Your self-awareness deepens, and your life becomes more meaningful as you pursue your dream.
Dreams encourage us to create something new and help us grow as people. If it feels like you can’t think of any dreams, try approaching the topic from another angle. What are your goals for the next ten years? Where would you like to be in life then? Goals reflect what matters to you – and they may be connected to your dreams.
You can also reflect on your values and needs. What would your daily life look like if your core needs were fulfilled and you were living fully aligned with your values? What would your ideal life be like? By starting from the things you find meaningful, inspiring, or worth striving for, you move closer to your dreams. Your dreams can be small things or big ideal visions tied to your life situation. Whatever they are, they are yours – and just right as they are.
