Singleness – A Temporary Situation or a Lifestyle?

Many young people and young adults are interested and willing to enter into a relationship. However, it’s good to keep in mind that it’s not worth starting a relationship if you don’t feel ready for it. Being single can also be a lifestyle and a conscious choice. One can live a good life alone: you have the freedom to live on your own schedule, make your own decisions, and spend your time according to your own wishes.

However, many singles feel pressure from their surroundings to be in a relationship. A relationship should not be started against your will or due to outside pressure. It’s important to listen to your own wishes and needs and decide for yourself what kind of step you're ready to take. It’s helpful to stop and reflect:

  • Do I want to be in a relationship?
  • When will I be ready for a relationship?
  • What do I want from a relationship?
  • What do I want from life?

Why Can’t I Find a Partner?

Being single can be a temporary phase, but some people live alone their entire lives. Often, even singles themselves wonder why they are alone and why forming a romantic relationship feels difficult, even if they would like one.

There are many reasons for being single: life circumstances, shyness, fearfulness and difficulty expressing emotions, childhood and adolescent experiences, disappointments in past relationships, traumatic experiences, or questioning one’s own sexuality. Sometimes, very high expectations and demands for a relationship and a partner can also make it harder to find someone.

Finding the right partner is not always easy. However, a partner can often be found in places where you feel comfortable. We are naturally drawn to people who are like-minded, enjoy the same things, and feel familiar. A shared interest can be a good starting point. Love can arise at first sight, but it can also grow over time through getting to know someone. There is no single right way to start a relationship.
