General Information About Self-awareness
Summary
You can read the full article below.
Self-awareness is personal understanding of yourself, meaning knowing who you are and what kind of person you are, with both your weaknesses and strengths. Self-awareness supports mental well-being and the creation of a life that feels like your own. Good s-awareness is also the foundation of self-esteem.
Self-awarenesse in Finding Your Own Path
Adolescence in particular is often marked by a feeling of being lost. This is normal, and in a fast-changing world, finding your own thing can sometimes feel difficult. However, this sense of being lost can be eased by lighting your own path—by pausing for a moment and reflecting on yourself, since this can help you develop your self-awareness.
You can increase your Self-awareness by considering questions such as:
- How do I see myself?
- What thoughts do I have about myself?
- What do I wish for? What dreams do I have?
- What do I need in order to feel well?
- What am I good at, and where do I experience successes?
- In what situations have I felt I failed, and how long do these feelings last?
- How do I react to failures and setbacks?
In everyday life, we often act according to how we are used to acting, or how we are expected to act. Sometimes we might also think we want something that in reality does not match our needs. Perhaps we follow the values of our childhood family and live our lives according to them. Other people’s perceptions and judgments of us can also shape our own self-image.
Give Time for Self-examination
Through self-examination, you can learn to become aware of your own behaviour, desires, emotions, thoughts, and actions. By truly giving space for self-examination, you can come closer to your true inner self. On that foundation, you can build a daily life and a future that feels meaningful. When you know and accept yourself—with all your flaws—your self-esteem will also rest on a strong foundation.
Everyone engages in self-examination in their own way; while some pause over coffee with a friend, others write in a journal, and someone else might learn about themselves through doing. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself:
- Is that really my trait? How does it show in me or in my actions?
- Am I truly the way I am perceived?
- Can I accept that I am not perfect?
Self-awareness helps you overcome your own fears as well as understand and accept diversity—both in yourself and in others. Good self-awareness increases well-being and helps build strong self-esteem.
