MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health is an integral part of health and a cornerstone of wellbeing. Good mental health is an asset that helps us to experience life as meaningful and enjoyable. It helps us to form and maintain relationships, to function as productive, creative members of our communities and to feel accepted in our communities.

MENTAL HEALTH IS ALSO AN ASSET

Good mental health gives us psychological that helps us accept changes in our lives and cope with loss. It enables us to perceive, understand and interpret our environment and to adapt or change it when necessary. It also gives us self-esteem: a positive view of oneself and one’s potential for development.

MENTAL HEALTH IS A RESULT OF MANY DIFFERENT FACTORS

Mental health is shaped by one’s personal growth and development throughout life. It is influenced by many factors: individual characteristics and experiences, social interactions and societal structures, resources, and cultural values.

Another significant factor impacting mental health are community values and individual attitudes: how mental health disorders are treated, whether people with mental health problems are stigmatised, how much people respect each other, how well fairness and equality are achieved.

Our mental wellbeing varies from day to day. Stress can build up excessively in the rush of studies and everyday life. It is important to pause and take advantage of the small moments in everyday life that help us to relax.

YOU CAN BOOST YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

When we see mental health as a resource and a life skill, it also means that mental health can be strengthened, supported, learned, and practised. Key mental health skills include emotional skillssocial interaction skills, and problem-solving skills.

Other key skills include positivity, willingness to learn new things, desire to participate in one’s community, and the appropriate determination and ability to stand up for oneself.

Mental health is built in everyday life, and through our everyday choices, we can influence our own wellbeing. Everyday routines and rhythm, regular eating and healthy nutrition, suitable exercise and physical activity, and adequate rest and sleep are the basic ingredients for mental wellbeing. Relationships and pleasant moments contribute to wellbeing.
