Safer Space Principles

To ensure that everyone feels comfortable and safe sharing their perspectives, we follow the principles of a safer space in all Nyyti’s activities, groups and events. These principles aim to create practices that allow each participant to contribute to equality and safety. These principles may also be complemented based on specific activities.

Together, We Create Safer Spaces

With respect and confidentiality

  • We give everyone space to be themselves. We avoid making assumptions or generalisations about other people or groups of people.
  • We do not discriminate against or treat anyone unequally on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, religion, origin, appearance, disability, health status, or any other personal characteristic.
  • We respect each other’s boundaries, privacy, and right to self-identification.
  • We show kindness and acceptance towards others and ourselves.
  • We commit to confidentiality. We do not discuss people who have taken part in the activities, or any information that could identify them, outside the activities.
  • In text-based activities (e.g. Discord and AI assistant), we do not share our own or others’ identifying information, such as addresses or contact details.
  • Employees have a duty to file a child welfare notification and/or a police report if they become concerned about the wellbeing of a minor. Staff members also have a duty to file a police report if they receive information about a planned serious offence.

By allowing space for growth and learning

  • We remember that we do not need to know everything in advance. Making mistakes and asking questions is allowed. We aim to respond to mistakes with humane understanding.
  • We give each other constructive feedback and are open to receiving feedback. When needed, we have the courage to apologise and change our own behaviour.
  • We strive to understand others and help others understand us.

By sharing responsibility

  • We make sure that everyone is heard and has the opportunity to participate. Everyone’s experiences and views are valuable.
  • We aim for accessibility in our own communication. We use language that is understandable to everyone and clarify when needed.
  • We recognise that everyone has the right to decide for themselves what they are ready and willing to share about themselves. No one should be pressured to talk about their background, identity, or any other personal matters.
  • We aim to recognise our positions of power in relation to others and act with awareness of them.
  • We intervene in si tuat ions where the safer space principles are violated. Concerns and problematic situations can also be reported to the person responsible for the activity or to Nyyti ry’s harassment contact persons.
  • We all share responsibility for creating a shared atmosphere and for everyone’s safety.
