WHEN YOU ARE WORRIED OR ANXIOUS ABOUT THE CORONAVIRUS

It is normal that the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and the restrictive measures connected to slowing it down cause worry. Sadness, confusion, fear, anxiety, and feelings of hate are also normal reactions in these situations.

Talk about your worries and feelings with your loved ones and friends. If you feel very troubled, seek counselling. Low-threshold counselling is available at the MIELI Mental Health Finland crisis hotline at +358 9 2525 0113 and the Sekasin chat.

Nyytis group chats are organized throughout the year and some are in English. Nyyti has and will also organise group chats in Swedish and Finnish for discussing the anxiety caused by the coronavirus.  Nyyti’s Hengähdystauko (“breathing space”) section (available only in Finnish) provides good exercises for calming down the mind.

You can also read about ways to alleviate worry on the Mental Health Foundation website. Mielenterveystalo.fi  (“The Mental Hub”) offers good self-care instructions (information available only in Finnish and Swedish).

It is important to keep some healthy distance from the news flow and to follow reliable sources. Reliable info can be found in Terveystalo.fi (“the Health Village’s Infection Hub)”, including a coronabot currently in trial use (information is available only in Finnish) as well as in the website of Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL)

Despite these unusual conditions, it is important to try to stick to everyday routines whenever possible. Remember to sleep, eat, and exercise. Keep in touch with your loved ones and friends.  Remember to also do things that give you pleasure.

IF YOU SUSPECT YOU HAVE THE CORONAVIRUS

It is important for all suspected coronavirus cases to be tested in a laboratory. If you suspect that you have coronavirus, carry out a symptom assessment using the Omaolo website. You can also book an appointment at a health centre. Mild symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, feeling feverish, or a moderate fever.  Here you can see the home care instructions provided by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare.

Read more about the coronavirus and seeking treatment from Terveystalo.fi (“the Health Village’s Infection Hub”) (information available only in Finnish).

More information can be found on the websites of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and the Finnish Student Health Service FSHS.
